More About Your Pilates Teacher

How I Began Pilates

I discovered Pilates in 2000, just after my second daughter was born. Like all new mothers I was keen to get back in shape and I was thrilled with the results.  I was looking for a new family-friendly career, so started on a complete retraining programme. In 2002 I qualified as a personal trainer, with Premier Training. I  enrolled with Michael King at the Pilates Institute in London in 2003 and began training to become a Pilates instructor. I have attended courses and workshops every year since then, training with the APPI in London and others, continue to improve and extend my knowledge. In June 2010, I was awarded my Matwork Diploma by the Pilates Institute.

Personal Trainer in Exeter

I am passionate about Pilates and enjoy sharing my knowledge of Pilates with others. I also enjoy many other forms of exercise and am a keen runner and cyclist.

Teaching one to one gives me the opportunity to really get to know my clients and to understand their specific requirements and choose the best possible exercises for them. I have recently started teaching many of my one to one clients on the Pilates Reformer.

In a class environment my teaching style has evolved and I now prefer to offer a functional, fitness based Pilates. This is suitable for all fitness levels, ages and abilities. I believe a fitness style Pilates works best for groups, it’s easy to follow, not intimidating and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Testimonials

Although I have exercised consistently since childhood, I didn't discover Pilates until I reached middle age and now it is an important weapon I use in my endeavours to remain middle aged for the rest of my life! On a personal level, a sacro-iliacal joint weakness which was always prone to injury, has been restored and pain free since performing Pilates four years ago. Indeed Pilates has made a significant contribution to my positive mental state following a personal loss a few years ago. This would not be possible were it not for the social environment in which the classes are conducted and for this we must thank the teacher, Tessa, whose unfailing enthusiasm, knowledge and empathy ensures that the mood is relaxed but purposeful. I would strongly recommend these Pilates classes to anyone of any age or condition; they can make a significant contribution to your quality of life.

As a busy GP, I frequently see patients with back pain. Some of them are only in their 20's. In many cases poor posture and lack of abdominal muscle strength are the aggravating factors. I have been doing Pilates with Tessa for many years and frequently recommend Pilates classes to my patients.

I had some really good news a couple of weeks ago - I have managed to get my bone density back to absolutely normal for my age! I was over-the-moon! I try to keep pretty fit but the Pilates, in my opinion, is the one thing that has made the greatest difference - weight bearing on different parts of the body - so once again - big thank you.
